I read my post professional masters at the Berlage Centre for Advanced Studies in Architecture and Urban Design at the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. I exhibited at the 15th Venice Architecture Biennale in 2016 and at the Bi-City Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism in Shenzhen in 2015. I am the runner-up to the Dutch Young Architect Prize (‘Jonge Architecten Prijs 2015’). I currently lecture at my alma mater - the School of Architecture and Planning at the University of the Witwatersrand where, among many other responsibilites, I lead the third year design studio - and I run a design practice specialising in architectural and urban design work, website design (UX and graphics) and branding and co-ordinating special events. It is an architectural and engineering wonder. The house is terraced into a north-facing (maximum solar exposure) ridge with views all the way to Pretoria and the Magaliesburg on clear days.&nbsp; The plan is simple: rooms open off the central double-loaded circulation spine. In section, this circulation spine is a straight stair that rises five storeys. It is roofed by a skylight. Every room has a northern exposure, corner windows that slide into the cavity wall that frames them and access to the rooftop of the space below. My intervention was to reinforce the house’s purity (a strong connection to the hill and outdoors) by improving its climatic performance. I therefore focused my energy on the glazed stairway, the roof platforms and the hill. The glazed central stairway was conceived as a climatic conservatory. (I retained the existing structure, but replaced the glass). The poor insulative property of the glass roof was exploited by installing operable openings. In winter, the openings can be closed and the glazed stairway space allowed to overheat like a greenhouse and simultaneously heat the attached cooler rooms of the house by convection; in summer, the glazed stairway is opened and thus cools the adjacent rooms of the house. The roof platforms were landscaped to allow usage and improve the thermal insulation of the rooms beneath: One roof platform was flooded to become a moat / roof water garden. This feature has security, insulative and aesthetic functions. Another platforms were planted to support pickle ball and putt-putt, a third becomes a zen garden while another became a deck for sun tanning and entertaining. The roof of the second bedroom accommodates the solar panels. When built, the water table on the hill was traversed by the construction of the retaining walls that support the terraced platforms that characterise the house. I saw this as an asset rather than a problem. We installed agrcultural drains to channel the groundwater away from the structure and into the new water storage tanks that are placed in the lowest point of the house - the driveway - and planted water intensive trees to further drain the soil. Water is also used to aid the evaporative cooling of the glazed stairway&nbsp; <img width="960" height="1264" width_o="960" height_o="1264" The unit is on the first floor in a 1960s Harold le Roith apartment building. It overlooks the Parkview Golf Course.&nbsp; The client wanted to redesign the interior of the unit.&nbsp; He is a single male in his early thirties who has allergies. He enjoys bathing, sleeping, privacy, entertaining, gardening, silence and tidiness. He wanted the living space to have seating space to accommodate five people simultaneously and allow for conversations and board game play; a screen or television (but it should not be the focal point); storage space for curiosities like models, books and objects and a vacuum cleaner. He needed a workspace that is discreetly located in the living area. He noted that the washing machine connection is in the kitchen. He wanted the kitchen to accommodate a dish washer, hob, oven, extractor and to have ample storage space. The client wanted the apartment to be specified to be low maintenance and easy to clean. He wanted space for pot plants in all rooms except the bedroom. For the bathroom he requested a bathtub, separate shower, basin and wc. The bedroom should blackout, not have any workspace in it nor any plants. demolishing the existing partition wall between the bedroom and living room and building a new wall from black face brick in basket weave pattern 900mm into the living room. I placed the bedroom door off the entrance hall. This allowed both rooms to be more usable (more storage in bedroom and an uninterupted blank wall in the living room). The face brick is a feature that differentiates the unit. I reconfigured the bathroom by demolishing the existing shower and replacing it with a bathtub, placed a wc nearer to the duct which freed up space to place a separate shower. The kitchen received new counter tops, a gas hob and a new pantry. The original house was completed in the early 1980s on a steep west facing slope. It consists of five separate face brick structures with a skillion roof. One is the garage; the second is the living room, dining room, tv room, study and kitchen; the third one has the three bedrooms and two bathrooms; the fourth is the entrance hall and the fifth the entertainment structures (one part roofed by thatching, the other by concrete tile). Beneath the bedrooms wing is a basement that houses the staff accommodation. The client is an expat who wishes to use the house as her retreat during holidays. She has permitted her two adult cousins and their mum to live in the house when she is not there. The client wanted to update the interior to her taste and create separate bachelor pads for her two cousins, improve the connection between the existing living room and outdoor area and remove the I decided a simple pattern printed on a standard t-shirt was not ambitious enough to mark the occassion. I proposed a new ‘t-shirt’ (‘the twisted side seam’) which enhances fit on the body that is reversible (two t-shirts in one) that incorporated the School’s new branding. Using the t-shirt is to reinforce the structural changes that were being undertaken and the reverible nature allowed more value / mileage out of the garment. A pattern print could be incorporated onto the 241 (two for one) t-shirt. This thesis began with a simple question: what might the five previously iconic but today nearly derelict petrol stations all on the same site called the Viking become today? Then, the Viking was strategically located in the Baragwanath Buffer Zone. The buffer separated the white suburbs of Johannesburg from its black suburbs. Today, due to four outside forces, the Viking has fallen into near dereliction:1. the collapse of Apartheid, so the buffer zone has been ‘decomissioned’ and thus placing the Viking within the sprawling city;&nbsp;2. the construction of better motorways (N1); 3. I made two observations that I felt had design implications since both were to do with potential user groups. The major users of the Viking were long distance truckers hauling goods from harbours in the Cape to as far as Kenya. The second was that the buffer zone has been inhabited by approximately 50,000 squatters. It became clear that the Viking could become a facility that supports both the exhausted truckers and these vulnerable citizens. The vehicle would remain on ground on a conveyer belt where it would be serviced by locals. It would be weighed, washed, receive a minor check-up and the tachometer would be reset. The driver would be serviced too: he could fire weapons in the shooting range, complete an obstacle course, visit a doctor, stretch or swim laps in the pool, spend a few hours in a hotel room, enjoy local specialities in the food court, watch sports or participate in a sporting activity or shower. Initially, I was interested in the infrastructure that facilitates our aspirations. My own desire for differentiation from those in my class who also approached the challenge from that perspective pushed me to explore facilities that help us to artificially represent ourselves as having reached our aspirations. I became interested in the spaces that allow humans to appear as if they are living the good life...because ‘I love acting, it is so much more real than life’. The facility that is easily accessible to many people and, for me, most clearly captured our desire to transform ourselves into fantastic figurines was the hairdresser. (The cosmetic surgery is not easily accessible and the gym’s too time consuming, even with the use of stimulants). The institution that most clearly celebrates aspiration and our ability to transform our environment into the fantastic, for me, in architecture was heritage. The upper floors house ancilliary programmes like counselling facilities, look-book libraries, a gym, recovery rooms, a pool, preparation beds, minor surgery beds and office space. It celebrates design merit. Clients request to have their commission posted and designers compete to win the commission. The client is guaranteed an executable proposal. The winning designer is paid. Unsuccesful designers receive feedback as to why they did not excel and assurance that their ideas will not be stolen. All completed submissions receive a payment. The value for Clients is that they are exposed to a wider pool of designers and design possibilites; while for designers it is a platform for them to showcase their ability to a broader array of clients who are interested in design. Their client pool is not limited to their network. The site is designed for both android and ios operating systems and for mobile and desktop devices. It is presented from a client’s point of view since they are likely to be new users while the designers are likely to be returning ones. I designed the logo, the UX and the graphics and managed the SEO and analytics. The site is a continuous rolling carousel. The metaphor of a boxing bout informs the the styling and diction of the site. Due to the site’s main audience being clients it is more informative and introductory. This is to allow users to feel in control and to avoid them feeling as if they need to commit to anything or as if the site is gathering info or learning about them in any way. The logo combines abstractions of the two benefits the site provides: better and more appropriate ideas (represented by the light bulb) and constructive conflict or fair competition (the boxing glove). The logo is then manipulated to create other artwork, like icons. On the ‘how it works’ page for example: the logo becomes a light bulb. It represents ‘idea formation’, which is what happens in the particular ‘create a brief’ stage of the process. Similarly, the logo becomes two clashing boxing gloves. It represents ‘constructive collisions’, which is what happens in the particular ‘set up your competition’ stage of the process.
